Why Would I Need Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?

To prepare for placement of a prosthesis device, sometimes pre-prosthetic surgery is required for proper preparation of your mouth before the placement of the prosthesis. This is called pre-prosthetic surgery.

This may be minor oral surgery before placement of partial or full dentures. This may be required to facilitate maximum comfort of your dentures.  The denture will sit on the bone ridge, making it very important that the bone is ready for the prosthesis. This sometimes requires modifications to the bone ridge shape and size. Or during a tooth extraction, the bone may become uneven or sharp. In these cases, the bone may need reshaping or smoothing. In other cases, it could be that there is too much bone and it may need to be removed to ensure proper fit of the denture.

Pre-prosthetic surgery could include:

  • Bone smoothing and reshaping
  • Removal of excess bone
  • Bone ridge reduction
  • Removal of excess gum tissue
  • Exposure of impacted teeth
